Playa Hermosa · Costa Rica
A day shaped by the ocean
At Playa Hermosa, a good day does not need a long itinerary. Start by watching the sets from dry sand. Decide what the ocean allows today, then leave room for breakfast, a book and another look at the beach. This is the home coast of Pacific Soul Stays.
Find your bearings
Playa Hermosa, Garabito, Puntarenas, lies south of Jacó. Choose that location in your map app: Costa Rica has other beaches named Playa Hermosa, including one in Guanacaste.
A surf town with a conservation story
Save The Waves dedicated Playa Hermosa as a World Surfing Reserve in 2022. Its waves share the coastline with the Playa Hermosa–Punta Mala wildlife refuge. Enjoying this beach also means respecting wildlife, posted boundaries and any restrictions on lights or access. Ask about authorized conservation activities instead of assuming that a turtle encounter is available.
Watching is part of the experience
This is an exposed beach with powerful surf. A surf forecast helps experienced surfers compare conditions; it cannot tell a family that swimming is safe. Keep beach walks clear of breaking waves, follow local warnings, and be willing to make the day a shore day. A lesson elsewhere may be a better choice for a first session.
Build the day around one outing
Use Jacó for a town outing or head toward Esterillos for a different stretch of coast. Trying to fit both into every beach day can defeat the point of staying here. If your group has mixed interests, agree on a meeting time and keep a simple plan for transport back.
